Bible Verses About Gladiators And The Arena

Early Christians mostly spoke against gladiator games and arena shows, calling them bloody, cruel, and unfit for believers. Tatian, Irenaeus, Cyprian, Clement of Alexandria, Tertullian, Lactantius, Minucius Felix, and others all reject the arena as a place of murder, impurity, or public pleasure built on death. A few texts also use arena language in a positive, spiritual way for Christian struggle and martyrdom, especially Clement, Ignatius, and 1 Corinthians 9:25 and 1 Timothy 6:12.

The evidence is broad and strong for rejection of the games, while the athlete language is real but mostly metaphorical and should not be confused with approval of gladiator shows.
