Bible Verses About Gehenna And Final Judgment

Early Christians widely taught that Gehenna meant real judgment after death, not just a symbol. Writers like Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Cyprian, Origen, and Lactantius tied Gehenna to everlasting fire, the day of judgment, and punishment for the wicked. The evidence is broad across the 2nd and 3rd centuries and fits key Bible passages such as Matthew 25:41, Matthew 10:28, Matthew 25:46, Revelation 20:12-15, and Isaiah 66:24.

Some writers also linked judgment with fire that purifies or with resurrection, but the main line of teaching is clear and severe. A few fragments are only indirect or repeat the same point, so they are kept as support rather than as main witnesses.
