Bible Verses About Federal Headship And Adam

Early Christian writers taught that Adam stands at the head of the human race, that his sin and death affect all people, and that Christ is the second or last Adam who brings life and undoing of Adam's loss. Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Justin, Theophilus, Gregory Thaumaturgus, Methodius, and others all repeat this pattern in different ways, with Romans 5 and 1 Corinthians 15 as the main Bible passages behind it.

The evidence is broad and early, though some writers lean more on recapitulation and Christ-as-second-Adam than on a fully developed federal-headship formula. A few witnesses also use Adam more as a picture of human nature in general, so the wording is mixed, but the core idea is strong.
