Bible Verses About Election

Early Christian writers often tied election to God’s choosing of believers, the remnant, and the calling of the Gentiles, especially when they read Romans 9–11, Ephesians 1, 1 Peter 1, and Acts 13. Clement of Alexandria, Irenaeus, Tertullian, Origen, Cyprian, and Methodius all use election language, but they do not all mean the same thing in the same way.

Some texts speak about God’s choice before birth or before the world, while others use election for the church, the chosen remnant, or even the choosing of church leaders. The evidence is broad enough to show that early Christians accepted election language as biblical, but it is mixed on whether they meant unconditional individual predestination, corporate choice, or a mixture of both.
