Bible Verses About Did The Early Christians Believe In The Real Presence

Early Christians commonly taught that the Eucharist was more than ordinary bread and wine, and several major writers speak of it as Christ’s body and blood. Ignatius, Justin Martyr, Irenaeus, Cyprian, and later liturgical texts all use very direct language about partaking of Christ’s body and blood, and some tie this to John 6 and the words of Jesus at the Last Supper.

The evidence is broad across the 1st to 3rd centuries, though some authors also use symbolic or typological language, especially when explaining bread, wine, and scriptural images. The main pattern is not a denial of Christ’s real presence, but a strong sacramental realism that treats the Eucharist as a holy communion in Christ’s body and blood.
