Bible Verses About Did The Early Christians Believe Apostles Still Exist After The Apostolic Age

Early Christian writings do not treat apostles as a continuing office after the first generation, but they do speak of apostolic men, bishops, teachers, and prophets who kept apostolic teaching alive. Irenaeus and Tertullian strongly tie true teaching to succession from the apostles, while the Didache, Hermas, and Clement of Alexandria describe prophets, teachers, and church leaders working in the church after the apostles.

The Bible passages most directly used here place apostles as a foundation and show that the church could appoint other leaders, which fits a first-century and second-century handoff rather than ongoing apostles in the original sense. A few later texts use “apostles” more loosely or speak of apostolic authority, so the evidence is broad on continuity of apostolic teaching but thin for the claim that new apostles still existed in the same sense as the Twelve.
