Bible Verses About Did Early Christians Require Baptism For Church Membership

Early Christian writers treated baptism as part of joining the Christian community, not just a private symbol. Justin Martyr says converts were washed after they had been convinced and assented to the teaching, and then brought to the brethren; Acts 2:41 and Acts 8:12 also pair belief, baptism, and being added to the community.

Tertullian, Cyprian, Clement of Alexandria, and the Apostolic Constitutions all link baptism with entry, washing, illumination, and one Church, with Cyprian being especially direct that baptism belongs to the Church. The evidence is broad and strong for baptism as the normal doorway into church life, but it is also mixed on later questions like rebaptizing people from heretical groups and whether that proves anything about membership rules in every local church.
