Bible Verses About Coveting And Greed

Early Christians taught that coveting and greed were serious sins that could pull a person away from God. Clement of Rome, Ignatius, Polycarp, Hermas, Irenaeus, Cyprian, and Lactantius all warn against greed, love of money, and desire for what belongs to others. The Bible passages most often tied to this teaching include Exodus 20:17, Matthew 6:24, Luke 12:15, Luke 16:13, and 1 Timothy 6:10.

The evidence is broad and consistent across the first three centuries, and it also connects greed with idolatry, theft, quarrels, and loss of the soul. Some passages are direct moral teaching, while a few are Bible-background or shorter echoes of the same warning.
