Bible Verses About Conception And Life In The Womb

Early Christian writers taught that life in the womb is real and that conception is the start of human life. Tertullian, Lactantius, Clement of Alexandria, Ignatius, Methodius, and Origen all speak of the child in the womb as living, growing, and already known to God. Several writers also used Luke 1 to say that John leaped in Elizabeth’s womb and that Mary’s child was truly conceived before birth.

The evidence is broad across the 2nd and 3rd centuries, though some passages are indirect because they argue from Mary’s virgin conception or from anti-heretical debates rather than from a direct doctrine statement about ordinary pregnancy. The strongest theme is simple: the unborn child is not treated as mere matter, but as a real human life under God’s care.
