Bible Verses About Chrism And Anointing

Early Christian writings connect chrism and anointing to baptism, the Holy Spirit, and royal or priestly consecration. Tertullian, Cyprian, Irenaeus, and the Apostolic Constitutions all treat anointing as a real Christian rite or a strong image for Christ and the Spirit, not just a word play. Hermas also uses the seal language for baptismal life, while several writers link anointing to kingship, priesthood, and healing.

The evidence is broad across the 2nd and 3rd centuries, though some passages are typology from Exodus and Leviticus rather than direct liturgical description.
