Bible Verses About Apostolic Succession

Early Christian writings strongly taught that apostolic teaching was passed on through an ordered chain of bishops and presbyters, not left to private invention. Irenaeus, Tertullian, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, Cyprian, and the Apostolic Constitutions all connect true church teaching with succession from the apostles and with ordination by laying on of hands.

The clearest witnesses also name real lines of succession, like Peter to Clement and John to Polycarp, and argue that churches could point to their bishops as proof of continuity. The evidence is broad across the second and third centuries, though some passages speak more about guarding doctrine than about office alone, so the topic is well supported but not always in the same exact way.
