Bible Verses About Allegory And Biblical Interpretation

Early Christian writers often read Scripture on two levels: the plain historical sense and a deeper spiritual or figurative sense. Origen, Clement of Alexandria, Hippolytus, and others say some passages contain allegory, symbols, types, or mysteries, while still keeping the real events in view. At the same time, writers like Arnobius and Tertullian push back against making everything allegory and warn that not every event can be turned into a figure.

The clearest pattern is broad support for figurative reading of many Bible texts, paired with caution against forcing allegory where the text is meant to be read plainly.
