Does anyone know of a good Greek-English Lexicon they could suggest?
Hello, dear brother Samuel. Grace and peace be with you, dear brother in Christ.
I usually start with the "Greek Dictionary of the New Testament" that is included in the back of my Strong's Concordance. While technically not a true Lexicon, this Greek Dictionary does help determine the basic meaning of a particular Greek word.
If I understand correctly, the "definitions" in Strong's are usually a listing of all the various ways that a particular Greek work was translated in the King James Version. The Greek dictionary in the back of Strong's is almost always my starting place. But I try not to stop there.
My "go to" Lexicon over the decades has always been the old reliable "Thayer's Greek-English Lexicon of the New Testament" that has been around since the late 1800's.
The edition of Thayer's Lexicon that I currently use was printed in 2002 and all the Greek words are coded to Strong's Concordance numbers, so I can make an easy transition from looking up a word in Strong's, to finding the basic meaning in the back of Strong's, and finally to finding more information and more precise definitions in Thayer's.
From Thayer's, I sometimes jump to other resources (such as "Vine's Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words", Robertson's "Word Pictures in the New Testament", etc.) that go beyond a Lexicon and contain much more detailed discussions regarding certain Greek words.
Some years ago I purchased a copy of "The New Analytical Greek Lexicon" (Wesley J.
Perschbacher is the Editor) and it is helpful in that it lists all the various forms in which a Greek word appears in the New Testament, along with definitions. I must admit, however, that I do not use this analytical Lexicon very much. Thayer's is definitely my "go to" Lexicon.
I hope this is helpful to you, dear brother. May our dear Lord richly bless your heart for Him and your seeking first of His kingdom and His righteousness.
Dear brother Charles Hood,
Grace and peace be with you as well. Thank you for your suggestions. I will be looking into Thayer's work and possibly the others as well. Again thank you so much.
Thank you for your kind words, dear brother. May the riches in God's Holy Scriptures be your daily delight.
I do hope that you receive some other responses. I have dabbled a little bit with e-Sword, but I cannot make any specific recommendations regarding computer-based Bible-study tools. Maybe someone else has more experience with the Lexicons that come packaged with a Bible-study tool such as e-Sword? In addition, there must be some good internet-based Greek Lexicons out there too.
I guess my Greek word-study process is very basic:
1) Start with a word in a verse in the KJV.
2) Look up the word in the main part of Strong's Concordance to obtain the Strong's number for the Greek word.
3) Go to the Greek Dictionary at the back of Strong's Concordance for the Greek word and view the list of suggested definitions for the word.
4) Look up the Greek word in Thayer's based upon the Strong's number.
5) If time and energy permits, dig deeper using other Greek word-study reference works.
Many blessings to you, dear brother in Christ.
Hello brother Charles,
I believe your method may be a good one. I have two digital copies of Strong's work and will look into it. I will also look into Thayer's work. I would like a physical copy. It's easier to work with. Many thanks.
