If you search for "casting lots" in the Topical Bible section here, it gives categories of Gambling and Voting, but there is nothing substantial there. From what I can tell, it was never done again after Acts 1. After that, appointment of leaders is done with prayer and fasting for guidance. No early Christian writer suggests we should cast lots for these appointments anymore.
Thanks for your response, and sorry I probably should have responded sooner.
I see what you are saying, however nowhere do we see God directly recall the casting of lots, and I am scared because I have cast lots in Jesus' Name before with some very scary results.
I'm not sure what you mean by scary results, but one thing that prevented that from being the case in Acts 1 is that they had already narrowed it down to 2 men according to criteria that they understood about who can be an apostle. In the Old Testament, God's people were instructed to cast lots for settling divisions of land, and also used it for determining who would fill a role in temple work. For verse references, check this article: https://www.gotquestions.org/casting-lots.html. In the New Testament, we are never instructed to cast lots, and because of this, there are no details about when it's appropriate or who should do it, and most significantly, there are no promises associated with it. References in Jonah 1:7 and Matt 27:35 show it to be a practice of false religions as well. That doesn't mean that's what you were doing, but since there are no commands, instructions or promises from God about it, I wouldn't have any expectation that God answers it.
I really hope you are right.
For more context I have been worried that a particular thing qualifies as the unforgivable sin (I won't say what it is here), but I decided to pray and cast lots in Jesus' name. The long and short of it is, it fell multiple times that it was, and I willing did it anyway. So I ended up casting lots again and it has multiple times in a row showed that I am beyond being saved. It has been very consistent.
Thank you so much for taking the time to answer
Hi Abby I would like to share some of my thoughts with you. Imagine with me, I was to ask you a deep question, present with you a yes or no answer and demand a response. Suppose my question was how do you feel today? Answer A I feel amazing I am living the dream life, no problems at all. Answer B I feel absolutely 100 percent horrible. My life is completely shattered I am ready to commit suicide. Now continue to imagine with me, I was to demand a response from you, a forced response. Would that be kind of awkward? Let’s turn the question around. Personally most days of my life fit neither Answer A nor Answer B. I personally have a lot of struggles but I just spend time in prayer with God and he gives me strength. Imagine now, I was to present my honest answer to you either in written form or spoken but I was to continue on in great depth and frankly pour out my heart to you. With these thoughts in mind I will tell you how I feel about casting lots. I believe casting lots is a legitimate way of attempting to communicate with God if we have no other options. But I believe God much prefer to speak to us through the Bible or through the Holy Spirit.
Thank you, I don't know what to do now
I really messed up and it keeps landing that I can no longer be saved and honestly it makes sense. I know that I still need to follow Him to the best of my ability, but now... I would be thankful for any prayers.
I will be praying for you. I would however like to know “Have you asked God to forgive you?”
No, I mean, I am not sorry for the particular thing that I did. I know in my head that I need to be, but in my heart I still want to do it, so please pray. Otherwise, what good would it do.
Ok, I do not fully understand your situation. But you have shared enough that I believe, you most likely have a lot of stress in your life. And I feel so sorry for you. I will be praying for you and I also would like you to know that I (we) care for you and want to support you through your journey in life. Thank you for your openness.
thanks. I just don't want to except that it's over
I agree that you shouldn't accept that it's over. Regarding the unforgivable sin, have you worked through this page?: https://thehistoricfaith.com/early-christian-beliefs/the-unforgivable-sin-and-blasphemy-against-the-spirit
