Not Happy With My Church. Should I Keep Attending?

Hi, this is my first post here. I appreciate your responses as I know no people in my life who understand Kingdom Christianity.

I live in a region where Conservative Evangelical churches are common. The church I belong to is connected with a well-known conservative evangelical network. Many of our pastors and guest pastors come from conservative evangelical seminaries, so that can give you an idea of the teaching.

My church heavily preaches the false doctrines of dispensational pre-millennial eschatology (with a "secret rapture"), Christian Zionism (the Jews returning to Israel as a pre-requisite for Christ's return, etc.) and 5-point Calvinism.

Because of the pandemic and civil unrest, Conservative Evangelical churches (such as mine) are ramping up these (false) teachings about end times, etc. It's making me not want to attend. I find myself rolling my eyes and shaking my head (to myself) during sermons because I don't agree with what is said. One of the pastors is starting a series on dispensationalism, which I, in good conscience, do not want to listen to.

Church is not an uplifting or edifying experience, but leaves me feeling frustrated, alone, sad and angry. I dread Sundays now that I know the Kingdom truth (and have studied it for myself). I previously tried asking a pastor in private about head coverings and was given the "Corinthian prostitutes" theory (that Corinthian prostitutes shaved their heads). I explained there are no sources that prove that.

I was then told condescendingly that I am "young in my faith" and didn't know what I was talking about. Gaslighting is common if you disagree with their doctrine. David Bercot mentions this is a typical response of Conservative Evangelicals.

Although, the gospel taught at my church is solid (true gospel) and the fellowship is very good too. The congregation is large. The members have good fruit. I feel a bit guilty dissenting because I know the congregation prayed for a long time for my salvation.

Many other churches in my area are Charismatic/Pentecostal with shaky gospel teaching and New Age teaching, so those churches are out. There may be some other good churches that are solid, but the search is proving difficult.

My question is, should I keep attending my church and just "grin and bear" it though all the false teachings?

Should I attend a church online if I can't find one in my area?

Do I really need to fellowship? Does the Bible command it? (If I attend online)

I listened to David Bercot's course that explained it may be best to stay in your same church but just practice Kingdom Christianity. As an intellectual person, that is difficult for me, but if it is the best way, I will consider doing it.

Any advice, suggestions, experience is appreciated.

Thank you!

Rachel Miller

I’m sorry that was my 8 year old daughter responding to you. Out of the mouth of babes.

Thank you for sharing, Rachel Miller. Your situation does sound difficult. I believe fellowship with likeminded believers is essential for lasting spiritual victory. Jesus' ministry was built around close relationships, and the New Testament church lived a very close lifestyle. “All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of their possessions was their own, but they shared everything they had.

With great power the apostles continued to testify to the resurrection of the Lord Jesus. And God’s grace was so powerfully at work in them all that there were no needy persons among them. For from time to time those who owned land or houses sold them, brought the money from the sales and put it at the apostles’ feet, and it was distributed to anyone who had need.”

‭‭Acts‬ ‭4:32-35‬ “And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” ‭‭Hebrews‬ ‭10:24-25‬ I will be praying that God will continue to lead you on your journey. Attached is an Anabaptist church locator link that may be helpful.

Hi Rachel Miller God bless you in your journey! I can only speak from my experience , and that I had to physically move to go to the Church i Needed. Was it hard? Yes! But did God provide and is still providing? Yes!

My suggestion for you is to be willing to go wherever the Lord calls you. I tried to stay in my current Church setting for a while and was being a light the best I could but it came to a point where I had to leave. It wasn’t a doctrine problem but vision of/for the Church. That being said I love those Brothers it just wasn’t a good environment for a new Christian to be in.

I know there may be churches some distance from you where you would be welcome.

I would suggest you check out pilgrim Mennonite conference which has a map of a bunch of plain churches.

As a last point I would highly encourage you to make connections on here, the anabaptist/kingdom Christian world is really small and Brethren are really easy to get in touch with.

God Be with you!!

Hi Rachel Miller! Just wanted to share that I have struggled with your same predicament. Lately I have been meeting periodically with a small but very encouraging group of believers in my region. Most families there are familiar with and agree with David Bercot's and The Historic Faith's teaching. They also use conference calls and Zoom to supplement the in-person meetings, as the members are spread out across a wide area.

My family also visits with other fellowships and we are planning to host some weekly meetings here at home. We would love to have you over for a visit. Feel free to send me a message.

Hi Rachel Miller, I sympathize with your predicament. I don't feel I have much to add here, but I would suggest that you wouldn't stay where you are simply out of guilt/shame. That's not where Christians should live. If you were simply in disagreement, that would be one thing, but it seems like the situation is draining you emotionally. That may not be good for your long-term emotional or spiritual health.

Grace and peace.

Hello Rachel Miller,

We also live in your general region. We meet as a small group of Kingdom Christians in homes and occasionally travel to fellowship with other believers. We would also really enjoy getting to meet you. Geographically, there may be other believers nearer to you as well.

During your time of seeking and discernment as to where to attend you could listen to the Kingdom group called Followers of the Way. They have a treasure trove of teaching to keep you fed while journeying to the place God has for you; as well as giving you a sense of what you are looking for. https://www.followers-of-the-way.org/messages

Hello Rachel Miller, I am sorry to hear about your struggles at your church. I have in the past dealt with some of the same issues. I grew up in some churches that were not preaching the true gospel and that were giving the feel good story. A lot of churches are focused on getting more people in the seats than caring about their salvation and eternity. I will pray that God will lead you where He wants you to go. Also fellowship with brothers and sisters in Christ is essential and Biblical.

Hebrews 10:25 says, "Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another" It can be hard to attend a church where the kingdom life isn't taught. I know it would be a hard thing to do, but one option is to move to a location where there is a church that teaches and practices the Kingdom teachings. You say that there is fruit by the members, could you explain what you mean by that?
