The Martyrdom of Polycarp
Chapter 4: Quintus the Defector
Now a man named Quintus, a Phrygian, who had recently come from Phrygia, became afraid when he saw the wild beasts. This was the man who insisted that he and some others come forward voluntarily for trial. The proconsul, after many requests, persuaded him to swear and to offer sacrifice. Therefore, brethren, we do not commend those who give themselves up to suffering, as the Gospel does not teach us to do so.
