The Martyrdom of Polycarp
Chapter 18: Polycarp's Body is Burned
The centurion then, seeing the strife caused by the Jews, placed the body in the middle of the fire and consumed it. Afterwards, we took up his bones, considering them more precious than the finest jewels and more purified than gold, and placed them in a suitable location, where, when we gather together as opportunity allows, with joy and rejoicing, the Lord will grant us the ability to celebrate the anniversary of his martyrdom. This is both in memory of those who have already completed their course and for the preparation of those yet to walk in their steps.
