Chapter 11: Pagan Oracles Speak of Moses.
HOWEVER: since you do not see the need to abandon the ancient errors of your ancestors in obedience to these teachers, what teachers of your own do you claim have lived in a way worthy of trust in matters of religion? For, as I have often said, it is impossible for those who have not learned these great and divine things from knowledgeable individuals to either know them themselves or teach others correctly. Since it has been clearly shown that the opinions of your philosophers are obviously filled with ignorance and deceit, having perhaps now completely abandoned the philosophers as you once abandoned the poets, you might turn to the deceit of the oracles; for I have heard some speak in this manner. Therefore, I find it appropriate to share with you at this point in our discussion what I once heard among you about their statements. For when someone inquired at your oracle—it is your own story—about what religious individuals had ever lived, you say that the oracle answered: "Only the Chaldæans have obtained wisdom, and the Hebrews, who worship God Himself, the self-begotten King."
SINCE YOU BELIEVE THAT TRUTH CAN BE LEARNED FROM YOUR ORACLES: when you read histories and accounts of Moses' life written by those outside our religion, and when you know that Moses and the other prophets were descended from the Chaldeans and Hebrews, do not find it incredible that a man from a godly lineage, who lived worthily of his ancestors' godliness, was chosen by God to be honored with this great gift and to be appointed as the first of all the prophets.
