"You shall not go with them, nor shall you curse the people." He does not hint at anything regarding the people, for they all lay before His view, but refers to the mystery of Christ revealed beforehand. Since Christ was to be born of the forefathers according to the flesh, the Spirit gives instructions to Balaam in advance, so that he does not, in ignorance, pronounce a curse upon the people. Not that his curse could have any effect contrary to the will of God; but this was done to show the providence of God, which He exercised towards them because of their forefathers.
