Fragments from the Lost Writings of Irenæus
"Take Joshua, the son of Nun, for yourself." It was appropriate that Moses should lead the people out of Egypt, but that Jesus (Joshua) should lead them into their inheritance. Also, just as the law was meant to end, Moses' role should end, but Joshua, as the word and a true representation of the Word made flesh, should be a messenger to the people. Furthermore, it was suitable that Moses should provide manna as food for the ancestors, but Joshua should provide wheat; as the first-fruits of life, a symbol of the body of Christ, as Scripture declares that the Lord's manna ceased when the people ate wheat from the land.
