The First Apology
Chapter 11: The Kingdom that Christians Aspire to
When you hear that we seek a kingdom, you assume, without asking, that we mean a human kingdom; however, we speak of the one that is with God, as shown by the faith confessed by those accused of being Christians, even though they know death is the punishment for confessing. If we sought a human kingdom, we would deny our Christ to avoid being killed, and we would try to avoid detection to achieve what we want. But since our minds are not set on the present, we are not troubled when people kill us, since death is a debt that must eventually be paid.
