Chapter 3: The Demand for Judicial Investigation

To prevent anyone from thinking this is an unreasonable and reckless statement, we ask that the charges against the Christians be investigated. If these charges are proven, they should be punished as they deserve; [or rather, we will punish them ourselves.] But if no one can prove us guilty of anything, true reason forbids you from wronging innocent men for the sake of a wicked rumor, harming yourselves by choosing to conduct affairs based on passion rather than judgment. Every sensible person will agree that the only fair and just approach is for subjects to provide a clear account of their life and beliefs, while rulers make decisions guided not by violence and tyranny, but by piety and philosophy. In this way, both rulers and subjects would benefit. As one of the ancients said, "Unless both rulers and ruled philosophize, it is impossible to make states blessed." It is our responsibility to give everyone the opportunity to examine our life and teachings, so we do not suffer the consequences of those who are ignorant of our affairs; and it is your duty, when you listen to us, to be good judges, as reason requires. For if, once you have learned the truth, you do not act justly, you will be without excuse before God.
