NOW IT OCCURS TO ME TO MENTION THAT THE REPORT I HEARD ABOUT YOU WHILE YOU WERE IN ROME WITH THE BLESSED FATHER LINUS IS TRUE: The deservedly-blessed Clement, a listener of Peter and Paul, has now succeeded Linus. By this time, you have greatly enhanced your reputation, and may you, O woman, continue to increase it. I greatly desired to come to you so that I might find rest with you; but, "the way of man is not in himself." The military guard [under which I am kept] prevents my journey and does not allow me to go further. In my current state, I cannot do or endure anything. Therefore, considering writing to be the second best option for friends to encourage each other, I greet your sacred soul, asking you to continue strengthening your vigor. Our current labor is but small, while the expected reward is great.
