Chapter 1: His Own Sufferings: Encouragement to Perseverance.

FROM SYRIA ALL THE WAY TO ROME: I fight with beasts. Not that I'm consumed by wild animals, for these, as you know, spared Daniel by the will of God. Rather, it's beasts in the form of men, in whom the merciless wild beast himself hides, pricking and wounding me every day. But none of these hardships "move me, nor do I consider my life dear to myself," in such a way that I would love it more than the Lord. Therefore, I am prepared to face fire, wild beasts, the sword, or the cross, just so I may see Christ my Saviour and God, who died for me. So, I, the prisoner of Christ, who is driven along by land and sea, urge you: "stand firm in the faith," and be steadfast, "for the just shall live by faith;" be unwavering, for "the Lord causes those to dwell in a house who are of one and the same character."
