The Epistle of Barnabas
Chapter 20: The Path of Darkness
But the way of darkness is crooked and full of cursing, for it leads to eternal death with punishment. This path contains things that destroy the soul, such as idolatry, over-confidence, the arrogance of power, hypocrisy, double-heartedness, adultery, murder, robbery, haughtiness, transgression, deceit, malice, self-sufficiency, poisoning, magic, avarice, and a lack of the fear of God. On this path, too, are those who persecute the good, those who hate truth, those who love falsehood, those who do not know the reward of righteousness, those who do not hold onto what is good, those who do not judge the widow and orphan justly, and those who do not watch in fear of God but lean toward wickedness. They are far from meekness and patience; they are people who love vanity, chase after rewards, do not pity the needy, do not help the overworked, are prone to evil-speaking, do not know Him who made them, are murderers of children, destroyers of the workmanship of God, turn away those in need, oppress the afflicted, advocate for the rich, unjustly judge the poor, and in every way are transgressors.
