Chapter 113: Joshua as a Symbol of Christ

Here is the passage rewritten in modern English:

“This is what I mean. Jesus (Joshua), as I have frequently mentioned, who was called Oshea when he was sent to spy out the land of Canaan, was renamed by Moses as Jesus (Joshua). You neither ask why this was done nor do you seem puzzled about it or inquire deeply. Thus, you overlook Christ; and even though you read, you do not understand; and even now, though you hear that Jesus is our Christ, you don't realize that the name was given to Him not without purpose or by accident. Yet you engage in theological discussions as to why one letter was added to Abraham’s first name; and regarding why another letter was added to Sarah’s name, you have similar elaborate debates. But why don’t you similarly investigate the reason why the name of Oshea the son of Nave (Nun), given by his father, was changed to Jesus (Joshua)? Not only was his name changed, but he was also appointed as Moses' successor, being the only one among his peers who came out of Egypt, leading the survivors into the Holy Land; and as he, not Moses, led the people into the Holy Land and distributed it by lot to those who entered with him, in the same way, Jesus the Christ will gather again the dispersed people and will distribute the good land to each one, though not in the same manner. The former gave them a temporary inheritance, since he was neither Christ who is God nor the Son of God; but the latter, after the holy resurrection, will give us the eternal possession. The former, after being named Jesus (Joshua) and receiving strength from His Spirit, made the sun stand still. I have proven that it was Jesus who appeared and spoke with Moses, Abraham, and all the other patriarchs without exception, fulfilling the will of the Father; He also is the one who was born of the Virgin Mary and lives forever. The latter is the one by whom and through whom the Father will renew both the heaven and the earth; He is the one who will shine an eternal light in Jerusalem; He is the king of Salem in the order of Melchizedek and the eternal Priest of the Most High. The former is said to have circumcised the people a second time with stone knives (which was a sign of this circumcision with which Jesus Christ Himself has circumcised us from the idols made of stone and other materials), and to have gathered those who were circumcised from the uncircumcision, meaning from the error of the world, in every place by the stone knives, namely, the words of our Lord Jesus. I have shown that Christ was declared by the prophets in parables as a Stone and a Rock. Thus, we should understand the stone knives to mean His words, by which many who were in error have been circumcised from uncircumcision with the circumcision of the heart, which God by Jesus commanded those from that time to be circumcised with, who derived their circumcision from Abraham, saying that Jesus (Joshua) would circumcise a second time with stone knives those who entered into that holy land.
