Dialogue with Trypho
Chapter 98: Predictions of Christ in Psalm 22
I will repeat the whole Psalm so you can hear His respect for the Father and how He dedicates everything to Him, praying to be saved from this death, while also revealing in the Psalm who rises against Him and showing that He truly became a man capable of suffering. It goes like this: 'O God, my God, listen to me: why have You forsaken me? The words of my sins are far from my salvation. O my God, I will cry to You during the day, and You will not hear; and at night, it's not due to a lack of understanding in me.
But You, the Praise of Israel, dwell in the holy place. Our ancestors trusted in You; they trusted, and You delivered them. They cried to You and were delivered; they trusted in You and weren't ashamed.
But I am like a worm, not a man; a reproach of men, and despised by the people. All who see me laugh at me; they speak with their lips, they shake their heads: 'He trusted in the Lord; let Him deliver him, let Him save him if He desires him.' For You are the one who took me out of the womb; my hope from my mother's breasts: I was entrusted to You from the womb.
You are my God from my mother's belly: don't be far from me, for trouble is near; for there is no one to help. Many bulls have surrounded me; strong bulls surround me. They opened their mouths against me, like a ravenous and roaring lion. All my bones are out of joint and scattered like water. My heart has turned to wax melting within me. My strength is dried up like broken pottery; my tongue sticks to my throat; and You have brought me into the dust of death.
Many dogs have surrounded me; the assembly of the wicked have surrounded me. They pierced my hands and feet, they count all my bones. They look and stare at me; they divided my clothes among them, and cast lots for my garment.
But don't take away Your help from me, O Lord: listen to help me; save my soul from the sword, my only one from the hand of the dog. Save me from the lion's mouth, and my humility from the horns of the wild oxen.
I will declare Your name to my brothers; in the midst of the congregation, I will praise You. You who fear the Lord, praise Him: all you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him. Let all the descendants of Israel fear Him.'"
