Chapter 89: The Cross is the Only Thing That Offends Trypho Because of the Curse, But It Proves That Jesus is the Messiah.
THEN TRYPHO REMARKED: “Be assured that our entire nation is waiting for Christ; and we acknowledge that all the Scriptures you have quoted refer to Him. Furthermore, I also admit that the name of Jesus, by which the son of Nun was called, has greatly inclined me to adopt this view. However, we are uncertain about whether Christ should be crucified so shamefully. For anyone who is crucified is said in the law to be accursed, which makes me very skeptical on this point. It is quite evident that the Scriptures declare that Christ had to suffer; but we want to know if you can prove to us whether it was by the suffering condemned in the law.”
I REPLIED TO HIM: "If Christ was not meant to suffer, and the prophets had not predicted that He would be led to death because of the sins of the people, and be dishonored and scourged, and counted among the transgressors, and like a sheep be led to the slaughter, whose generation, the prophet says, no one can declare, then you would have good reason to wonder. But if these are to be His characteristics and distinguish Him to everyone, how can we do anything but believe in Him most confidently? And won't all who understand the writings of the prophets, whenever they hear that He was crucified, say that this is Him and no other?"
