Dialogue with Trypho
Chapter 81: He Tries to Substantiate this View from Isaiah and the Apocalypse
Isaiah spoke about this period of a thousand years: "There will be a new heaven and a new earth, and the former things will not be remembered or come to mind. Instead, they will find joy and gladness in what I create. For, behold, I make Jerusalem a place of rejoicing, and My people a joy. I will rejoice over Jerusalem and be glad in My people. The sound of weeping or crying will no longer be heard there. There will be no longer young people who die prematurely or old people who do not live out their days. For someone who is a hundred years old will be considered a youth, but a sinner who reaches a hundred years will be accursed. They will build houses and live in them; they will plant vineyards and eat their fruit and drink the wine. They won't build for others to live in or plant for others to eat. For like the days of the tree of life will be the days of My people, and the work of their labor will be plentiful. My chosen ones will not labor in vain or bear children destined for misfortune, for they will be a seed blessed by the Lord, and their descendants with them. Before they call, I will answer; while they are still speaking, I will say, 'What is it?' Then wolves and lambs will feed together, and the lion will eat straw like the ox, but the serpent will eat dust as its food. They will not harm or destroy each other on My holy mountain," says the Lord.
We understand that the phrase, "Like the days of the tree of life, so will be the days of My people; the work of their labor will be plentiful," subtly predicts a thousand years. Since Adam was told that he would die on the day he ate from the tree and did not complete a thousand years, we see the connection. We also recognize that the phrase, "The day of the Lord is like a thousand years," relates to this topic. Furthermore, there was a man among us named John, one of Christ's apostles, who prophesied through a revelation given to him that those who believe in Christ would live in Jerusalem for a thousand years. Afterward, the general and eternal resurrection and judgment of all humanity would occur. As our Lord also said, "They will neither marry nor be given in marriage, but will be like the angels, the children of the God of the resurrection."
