Dialogue with Trypho
Chapter 64: Justin Provides Additional Evidence to the Jew, Who Denies Needing This Christ
Here Trypho said, "Let Him be recognized as Lord, Christ, and God, as the Scriptures declare, by you Gentiles, who have all been called Christians from His name; but we, who are servants of God who made this same [Christ], do not need to confess or worship Him."
To this I replied, "If I were to be argumentative and careless like you, Trypho, I would no longer continue speaking with you, since you seem unwilling to understand what has been said and are only ready to give an argumentative response. However, since I fear God's judgment, I do not express an inappropriate opinion regarding any of your nation, about whether or not some of them might be saved by the grace of the Lord of Sabaoth. Therefore, although you act wrongfully, I will continue to respond to any proposition you bring up and any contradictions you make. In fact, I do the same with all people of every nation who wish to explore this subject with me or ask me about it. Accordingly, if you had paid attention to the Scriptures I previously quoted, you would already understand that those who are saved from your nation are saved through this man and share in His fate, and you would not have questioned me on this subject.
I will repeat the words of David that I previously mentioned and ask you to understand them instead of acting wrongfully and encouraging each other to merely contradict. The words David speaks are these: ‘The Lord has reigned; let the nations be angry: He sits upon the cherubim; let the earth be shaken. The Lord is great in Zion, and He is high above all the nations. Let them confess Your great name, for it is fearful and holy; and the honor of the king loves judgment. You have prepared equity; You have performed judgment and righteousness in Jacob. Exalt the Lord our God and worship the footstool of His feet; for He is holy. Moses and Aaron among His priests, and Samuel among those who call upon His name; they called on the Lord, and He heard them. In the pillar of the cloud He spoke to them; for they kept His testimonies and His commandments which He gave them.’
Moreover, from the other words of David, which I quoted earlier, and which you incorrectly claim refer to Solomon because they are inscribed for Solomon, it can be proven that they do not refer to Solomon, and that this Christ existed before the sun, and those from your nation who are saved shall be saved through Him. The words are these: ‘O God, give Your judgment to the king, and Your righteousness to the king's son. He shall judge Your people with righteousness, and Your poor with judgment. The mountains shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills righteousness. He shall judge the poor of the people, and shall save the children of the needy, and shall abase the slanderer; He shall endure with the sun, and before the moon, throughout all generations;’ and so on until, ‘His name endures before the sun, and all tribes of the earth shall be blessed in Him. All nations shall call Him blessed. Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things: and blessed be His glorious name forever and ever: and the whole earth shall be filled with His glory. Amen, Amen.’
You might also remember from other words spoken by David, which I mentioned before, how it is declared that He would come forth from the highest heavens, and return there, so that you may recognize Him as God coming from above, and as a man living among men; and it is declared that He will come again, and those who pierced Him will see and mourn Him. The words are: ‘The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky shows His handiwork. Day speaks today, and night shows knowledge tonight: They are not speeches or words whose voices are heard. Their sound has gone out through all the earth, and their words to the ends of the world. In the sun, He has set His dwelling; and He, like a bridegroom coming from his chamber, will rejoice as a giant to run his course: from the highest heaven is His going forth, and He returns to it, and no one shall be hidden from His heat.’”
