Dialogue with Trypho
Chapter 51: Proof that this Prophecy has been Fulfilled
When I finished speaking, Trypho said, "All the words of the prophecy you quoted, sir, are unclear and don't effectively prove what you're trying to argue." I replied, "If the prophets had not ceased, so that there were none in your nation, Trypho, after John, it would be evident that what I say about Jesus Christ might be considered ambiguous.
But since John came first, calling on people to repent, and Christ, while John was still by the River Jordan, came and ended his prophesying and baptizing, and also preached Himself, saying that the kingdom of heaven is near, and that He must suffer many things from the Scribes and Pharisees, be crucified, rise again on the third day, appear again in Jerusalem, and eat and drink with His disciples again; and foretold that between His first and second coming, as I mentioned before, priests and false prophets would arise in His name, which indeed has happened; how can these things be ambiguous when the facts support them? Moreover, He mentioned that there would no longer be any prophet in your nation, and that people recognized how the New Testament, which God previously announced His intention of introducing, was now present, meaning Christ Himself; and He expressed this in the following terms: 'The law and the prophets were until John the Baptist; from that time the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force.
And if you can accept it, he is Elijah, who was to come. He who has ears to hear, let him hear.'"
