Chapter 48: Before Proving Christ's Divinity, Trypho Requests Confirmation that He is the Christ.

AND TRYPHO SAID: “We have heard your thoughts on these matters. Continue from where you left off and conclude your discourse. Some of it seems paradoxical to me and completely lacking proof. When you say that this Christ existed as God before the ages, then that He chose to be born and become man, yet that He is not man born of man, this claim seems to me not only paradoxical but also foolish.”

AND I REPLIED: “I understand that this statement seems to be contradictory, especially to your people, who are often reluctant to understand or follow God's requirements, but are quick to follow those of your teachers, as God Himself states. Now surely, Trypho," I continued, "the proof that this man is the Christ of God does not fail, even if I cannot prove that He existed before as the Son of the Creator of all things, being God, and was born a man by the Virgin.

But since I have surely proven that this man is the Christ of God, whoever He may be, even if I do not prove that He existed beforehand and chose to be born a man with the same emotions as us, having a body, as the Father willed; it is only in this last matter that it is fair to say I have erred, and not to deny that He is the Christ, even if it appears that He was born as a man from men, and nothing more is proven than this, that He has become Christ by choice.

For there are some, my friends,” I said, “among our people, who admit that He is Christ, while believing Him to be just a man from men; with whom I do not agree, nor would I, even if most of those who now share my opinions said so; since we were commanded by Christ Himself to trust not in human doctrines, but in those proclaimed by the blessed prophets and taught by Himself.”
