Dialogue with Trypho
Chapter 44: The Jews Falsely Assure Themselves of Salvation, Which Can Only be Achieved Through Christ
"In every way, I will be found innocent if I earnestly try to convince you by providing evidence. But if you remain stubborn or indecisive due to the death that Christians face and refuse to accept the truth, you'll be the cause of your own troubles. You deceive yourselves by thinking that because you are descended from Abraham by flesh, you'll fully inherit the blessings promised by God through Christ. No one, not even those of Abraham's lineage, has anything to hope for except those who share Abraham's faith and understand the mysteries. I say that some commands were given to you concerning the worship of God and the practice of righteousness, while others were given regarding the mystery of Christ because of the hardness of your people's hearts.
God reveals this in Ezekiel when He says, 'If Noah, Jacob, and Daniel asked for sons or daughters, the request would not be granted to them.' And in Isaiah, He speaks similarly: 'The Lord God said, they will go out and look on the bodies of those who have sinned. Their worm will not die, and their fire will not be quenched, and they will be a spectacle to all flesh.' So you must remove this hope from your hearts and strive to understand how forgiveness of sins and the hope of inheriting the promised blessings can be yours. There is no other way than to know this Christ, be cleansed in the fountain Isaiah mentioned for the forgiveness of sins, and, from then on, to live sinless lives."
