Question 5
The chapter states that before the end, “this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world,” and then asks whether what’s preached globally today is actually that gospel; based on what you commonly hear in evangelism and church preaching, what would Bercot say is missing or distorted, and where might you resist his critique?
Another way to ask: The chapter says “the gospel of the Kingdom” must be preached to the whole world. When you listen to evangelism and sermons today, what would Bercot say is missing or twisted, and where do you think his criticism might go too far?

Direct Answer Based on Bercot’s argument, he would say much modern preaching is distorted because it centers on personal salvation while the Kingdom message is “almost totally missing.” He would push back that the biblical “Gospel of the Kingdom” includes announcing God’s reign and calling people into citizenship under Jesus, not only offering forgiveness.

Support from Transcript:

  • Jesus’ end-times statement: “this Gospel of the Kingdom will be preached in all the world… and then the end will come.”
  • Bercot observes: “although the Kingdom of God was the theme of Jesus’ preaching, the message of the Kingdom is almost totally missing from the Gospel that’s preached today.”
  • He contrasts themes: today’s preaching theme is “man’s personal salvation… It’s not the Kingdom of God.”
  • He insists disciples were also told to preach the Kingdom, so it’s not just “Jesus’ message” but the apostolic commission.
  • He questions modern global preaching: “A Gospel is being preached throughout the world today, but is it the Gospel of the Kingdom?”
Discussion Follow-ups Where do you think Bercot might be overstating his case (for example, churches that do teach obedience and discipleship)? What fears surface when “Kingdom” language sounds like it could downplay grace or salvation?
