Question 2
Jesus prayed that His disciples would be “sent into the world” yet “not of the world”; what practical differences should show up in a believer’s daily life if that prayer is actually being answered?
Another way to ask: If Christians are “in the world” but “not of the world,” what should look different in their everyday choices, habits, and attitudes? What changes would you expect to see if Jesus’ prayer is really being answered?

Direct Answer The transcript suggests believers stay present “in the world” but live as pilgrims who are “dead to” the world’s attractions, refusing love and friendship with the world while doing God’s will.

Support from Transcript:

  • Jesus prayed, “I do not pray that you should take them out of the world… They are not of the world… As you sent me into the world, I also have sent them into the world.”
  • So it does not mean retreat: “Does this mean that we retreat…? Not at all.”
  • John’s command: “Do not love the world or the things in the world… the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.”
  • “Being not of the world means that we live in the world, but we are dead to all of its attractions… pilgrims passing through… not making it our home.”
  • James warns that “friendship with the world is enmity with God.”
  • Outward religious branding is meaningless if love for the world remains (“Jesus stickers… gain nothing”).
Discussion Follow-ups What might “pilgrims passing through” look like with money, entertainment, and status? Where do we confuse being visible Christians with being obedient Christians?
