Question 9
Using Genesis 1:1–5, Bercot presses the question, “Why is it so hard to simply limit what we say to what God has revealed?”—what do you think is at stake emotionally or spiritually when Christians insist on being dogmatic where the text leaves questions unanswered?
Another way to ask: Why do you think Christians feel the need to speak with certainty when the Bible doesn’t answer every question, and what is going on in the heart when we do that?

Direct Answer Bercot suggests what’s at stake is prideful certainty and loyalty to preconceptions: people want firm, defendable conclusions even when Scripture is silent, and they may even accuse others of heresy over matters the text does not explicitly settle. Spiritually, this replaces humility before God’s words with dogmatism built on inference.

Support from Transcript:

  • In Genesis 1:1, he asks, “When does it say that God created…?” and answers the text only says, “In the beginning,” without specifying when.
  • He notes the passage does not state that creation of heavens and earth happened on “the first day,” though “it’s possible.”
  • He argues a “high degree of probability” day one begins in verse 3 (“Then God said, ‘Let there be light’”), but still admits “the passage simply does not say” how much time elapsed.
  • He says the gap could be “24 hours” or “a billion years later”—the key point: “We don’t know.”
  • He is “amaz[ed]” and “discouraged” by Christians making “dogmatic claims” and calling others “a heretic” over something “when the scripture doesn’t say that.”
  • He asks, “Why is it so hard to simply limit what we say to what God has revealed… and accept as unanswered” what He hasn’t.
Discussion Follow-ups Why do you think uncertainty feels threatening in church life? What spiritual habits (humility, patience, restraint) would help us speak only where Scripture speaks?
