Little Drummer Boy

Words by Katherine Kennicott DavisMusic by Katherine Kennicott Davis; Henry Onorati; Harry SimeoneWritten Tune CAROL OF THE DRUM

Come, they told me, pa rum pum pum pum
A newborn King to see, pa rum pum pum pum
Our finest gifts we bring, pa rum pum pum pum
To lay before the King, pa rum pum pum pum
Rum pum pum pum, rum pum pum pum
So to honor Him, pa rum pum pum pum
When we come.

Story Behind the Song

The song was written by Katherine Kennicott Davis in 1941 under the title “Carol of the Drum.” It imagines a poor boy who has no material gift for the newborn Christ and instead offers his drumming. The Trapp Family Singers recorded it in 1951, and it became widely popular after the Harry Simeone Chorale’s 1958 recording, after which Henry Onorati and Harry Simeone were commonly included in the song’s credits.
