Numbered for New Birth

God remembers the love of His people in the wilderness, yet He also accuses them of forsaking the living fountain and digging broken cisterns. This is the same divide set before us today. To be counted among God’s people is not a matter of descent, words, or religious rank, but of new birth and steadfast obedience. Israel was numbered in the desert for the Lord’s service; so also the church must ask whether we are fit to be counted among the living, or only found among the crowd. Origen says, “some worthy to be numbered, corresponding to the men of twenty years old who are numbered in the Book of Numbers, Numbers 1:3 were Israelitish men, but others who were not worthy of such account and numbering were children and women.”

The psalm teaches that God brings His people through water and then proves them by fire. John shows the water of purification giving way to the greater washing from above. A man may come to Jesus by night, yet he must not remain in half-light. He must be born of water and Spirit, leave vain glory, and confess that the Son came down from heaven for the life of the world. Whoever loves darkness repeats Jerusalem’s sin, preferring cracked cisterns to the fountain. Barnabas speaks plainly: “Be astonished, O heaven, and let the earth tremble at this, because this people has committed two great evils: they have forsaken Me, a living fountain, and have hewn out for themselves broken cisterns.”

Therefore let us praise God with fear, endure His testing without murmuring, and come into the light by deeds worthy of repentance. Better to be few and truly numbered than many and false.

“some worthy to be numbered, corresponding to the men of twenty years old who are numbered in the Book of Numbers, Numbers 1:3 were Israelitish men, but others who were not worthy of such account and numbering were children and women.”

— Origen, Commentary on Matthew

“Be astonished, O heaven, and let the earth tremble at this, because this people has committed two great evils: they have forsaken Me, a living fountain, and have hewn out for themselves broken cisterns.”

— Barnabas

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What broken cistern have you returned to—some habit, pleasure, or excuse—and what concrete act of repentance will you do today to forsake it?

2

How will you come into the light this week by a visible deed: confession of a hidden sin, restitution for a wrong, or seeking baptism if you have delayed it?

3

Where is God testing you as through fire, and what obedient act—prayer at fixed hours, fasting, guarding your tongue, or almsgiving—will you keep without murmuring?
