Day 349 of 365 · Bible in a Year

Build, Judge, Witness

The people of God are not excused from labor because enemies rage, nor excused from justice because worship continues. In Nehemiah, the builders pray and set a watch; they do not answer mockery with surrender. In Zechariah, the Lord rejects fasting that leaves the heart hard toward the widow, the stranger, and the poor. In Revelation, the holy city is trampled and the witnesses are slain, yet the word of God is not conquered. So the same rule stands in peace and in affliction: build faithfully, judge rightly, and confess Christ openly.

The danger in all three readings is hypocrisy under pressure. Men can carry stones in Jerusalem and still imagine evil in the heart. They can keep fasts and neglect mercy. They can speak of the temple and yet shrink back when testimony brings reproach. But God measures not walls only, nor days of fasting only, but “them that worship therein.” Therefore let worship be proved by obedience. As Theophilus says, “Thus says the Lord Almighty, Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassion every man to his brother; and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, nor the stranger; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 7:9-10”

If the church is mocked, this is no strange thing. Justin Martyr wrote, “for we who believe on Him are everywhere a reproach, ‘despised of the people;’ for, rejected and dishonoured by your nation, He suffered those indignities which you planned against Him.” Then let us not seek a religion of safety. Let us pray, keep watch, refuse cruelty, and bear witness until the Lord vindicates His servants.

“Thus says the Lord Almighty, Execute true judgment, and show mercy and compassion every man to his brother; and oppress not the widow, nor the fatherless, nor the stranger; and let none of you imagine evil against his brother in your heart, says the Lord Almighty. Zechariah 7:9-10”

— Theophilus of Antioch, To Autolycus

“for we who believe on Him are everywhere a reproach, ‘despised of the people;’ for, rejected and dishonoured by your nation, He suffered those indignities which you planned against Him.”

— Justin Martyr, Dialogue with Trypho

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What work of obedience have you delayed because of fear of mockery or opposition, and when will you take it up this week with prayer and watchfulness?

2

Whom have you treated without mercy—a brother, a stranger, a poor person, or someone under your power—and what concrete act of restitution or compassion will you do today?

3

Where have you kept outward religious practice while hiding bitterness or evil thoughts, and to whom must you confess, forgive, or make peace before the week ends?
