Day 344 of 365 · Bible in a Year

Sealed for Endurance

The Scriptures today turn our eyes away from outward abundance and toward the one thing needful: to belong to God in truth. Ezra leads a people through danger, not by horses or royal strength, but by humbling themselves before God with fasting. The Preacher shows that riches, long life, and many children do not satisfy a man whose soul has not received true good. Zechariah declares that the lamp of God is not kept burning by human force. And John beholds a multitude preserved through judgment, marked as the servants of God and made white by the Lamb.

So let no man boast in possessions, rank, or earthly security. A full table can still leave the soul hungry. A long life can still be barren. The seal of God is not set on the proud, the careless, or the double-minded, but on those who endure in faithful obedience. Therefore repentance must be earnest, not merely spoken. As Cyprian says, "...we must lament not only in words, but also with fastings and with tears, and with every kind of urgency."

This is our confidence: not that tribulation will be removed, but that God knows His own in the midst of it. The white robes are not the garments of the comfortable, but of those who held fast through affliction. Cyprian says, "And he said to me, These are they who have come out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb."

Then let us seek not the stranger’s portion of passing goods, but the inheritance of servants who stand before God. Fast, pray, repent, give alms, and keep the lamp burning, that you may be found sealed in the day of trial.

“...we must lament not only in words, but also with fastings and with tears, and with every kind of urgency.”

— Cyprian, Epistles

“And he said to me, These are they who have come out of great tribulation, and have washed their robes, and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.”

— Cyprian, Treatises

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What concrete fast or act of repentance will you keep this week, not in words only but with real urgency before God?

2

What possession, comfort, or ambition has occupied your soul like a stranger’s portion, and what alms or relinquishment will you make to break its hold?

3

Whom will you serve this week in a costly way—through prayer at set times, care for the poor or sick, or patient endurance under a hardship—so that your lamp is found burning?
