Return and Be Cleansed

Hezekiah teaches that reform begins without delay. He opened the house of God, cleansed what had been neglected, and called the people not merely to feel sorrow but to sanctify themselves and keep the feast. Proverbs says the same in another form: a man often reproved must not harden his neck. Sin is not healed by excuses, nor by outward rites while the heart stays stubborn. As Justin reminds us, God once said, “I have hated, I have despised your feast-days, and I will not smell in your solemn assemblies: wherefore, though ye offer Me your burnt-offerings and sacrifices, I will not accept them;” The holy things of God do not profit those who cling to uncleanness and violence.

Yet these readings are not only severe; they are a great call to mercy. Hezekiah summoned even those long estranged, mocked though the invitation was, and urged them to return. Some humbled themselves and came. Those not fully prepared were not cast off when they sought God with a true heart. So the door of repentance stands open, but it must be entered in earnest. Justin sets the promise before us: “and let him return unto the Lord, and he will obtain mercy, because He will abundantly pardon your sins.”

Therefore let your repentance be visible. Put away what defiles. Keep the assemblies of the church with a clean conscience. Restrain anger, for wrath multiplies sins and sets households aflame. Love wisdom, and give joy to your Father by obedience. The feast acceptable to God is a cleansed people who return, worship, and amend their lives.

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What one defiling practice, possession, or companionship must you put away this week so that your worship is not joined to disobedience?

2

Whom have you wronged by anger or strife, and when will you go to confess it plainly and make peace?

3

How will you keep repentance concrete in the next seven days through attendance at the church’s worship, set prayer, and an act of almsgiving or mercy?
