Living Stones Without Guile

The temple stands at the center of these readings, but not as a shelter for empty religion. Solomon built the house of the Lord in splendor, yet Micah cries out from that same holy place that the Lord comes down in judgment against Samaria and Jerusalem. A sanctuary does not protect a deceitful people. God is not honored by cedar and gold while malice, bribery, strife, and lying remain among those who draw near.

So Peter turns our eyes to the true building: Christ the living Stone, and we ourselves as living stones joined to Him. If we would belong to this house, we must cast away what defiles it—guile, hypocrisy, envy, evil speech. The man who blesses God but loves a bribe, who offers sacrifice but keeps contention in his home, is pulling stones from the wall with his own hands. As Theophilus says, “you shall not take a gift, for gifts blind the eyes of them that see and pervert righteous words.”

The Lord does indeed come down, not because He is indifferent, but because He has concern for human frailty. Yet His coming shakes the high places. What is lofty in us—pride, harsh speech, stubborn self-justifying—must melt. Then the house is made fit for sacrifice: not beasts on an altar, but patient endurance, honest speech, and doing good when wronged. “who follows His footsteps and His ways, who imitates that which Christ both did and taught; in accordance with what Peter also exhorts and warns, saying, Christ suffered for us, leaving you an example that you should follow His steps.” The church is crowned not by outward peace alone, but by obedience that endures trial without deceit.

“you shall not take a gift, for gifts blind the eyes of them that see and pervert righteous words.”

— Theophilus of Antioch, To Autolycus

“who follows His footsteps and His ways, who imitates that which Christ both did and taught; in accordance with what Peter also exhorts and warns, saying, Christ suffered for us, leaving you an example that you should follow His steps.”

— Cyprian, Treatises

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What deceit, evil speaking, or household strife must you put away today so that your life is not a divided house before God?

2

Is there any gift, advantage, or partiality tempting you to bend righteous words, and what concrete refusal or confession must you make today?

3

Who has wronged you, and how will you follow Christ's steps this week by doing good, speaking truthfully, and enduring without retaliation?
