Day 305 of 365 · Bible in a Year

Just Weights, Restored House

The Lord who appoints gatekeepers for His house also weighs the deeds of men. In the temple, entrances, treasuries, and offerings were not left to disorder. Men were set in their places, and dedicated gifts were kept for holy use. This teaches us that what is given to God is not common, and what belongs to His service must be handled with fear. As Origen says, “the gold and the silver I possess, lo, I have given it for the house of my Lord, to the full;” Such giving is not loss but right worship.

Yet Amos shows that no nearness to altar or sanctuary will save a crooked people. The Lord sees through false balances, proud speech, hidden violence, and trust in riches. If a man cheats his neighbor and then brings an offering, he has not escaped the day of wrath. Riches will not deliver him; righteousness will. Therefore the wise man guards his dealings, keeps his tongue from talebearing, and uses his goods for blessing. “For a blessing is upon the head of him that gives. Proverbs 11:26”

Still, judgment is not God’s last word. He promises to raise up the fallen tabernacle of David, so that the remnant and the nations may seek the Lord. God tears down hypocrisy, but He rebuilds a people for His name. Therefore let us not boast in belonging, but prove our place in His restored house by upright measures, faithful stewardship, quiet lips, and liberal mercy. The house God restores is not built by greed, deceit, and pride, but by those who repent and walk in justice.

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What money, possession, or stored good can you set apart this week for the church, the poor, or the sick, so that your substance is truly given for the Lord’s house?

2

Where have your measures been false—at work, in trade, in promises, or in speech—and what concrete restitution or confession must you make today?

3

Whose reputation have you handled carelessly, and how will you stop talebearing, seek forgiveness, and keep faithful silence where silence is owed?
