Set Your House in Order
These readings bid us stop speaking great words before God while keeping a crooked house. Hezekiah, when death stood at his door, did not flatter himself; he turned and prayed. Yet the same chapter shows how quickly a healed man may become vain, displaying his treasures and preparing ruin for those after him. As it is written, “Behold, the days come when all that is in your house, and that which your fathers have laid up in store, shall be carried to Babylon.” Wealth, reputation, and outward strength do not stand long when the heart is careless.
Job teaches that God is mighty and just, not deceived by pious speech. Hosea exposes the lie of a people who say, “My God, we know thee,” while multiplying idols and empty offerings. Barnabas says truly, “For He hath revealed to us by all the prophets that He needs neither sacrifices, nor burnt-offerings, nor oblations, saying thus, ‘What is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me, saith the Lord?” The Lord seeks obedience, mercy, and a clean turning of life.
Paul therefore warns Timothy of corrupt men, religious in appearance yet rotten in desire, always learning and never coming to the truth. Against such decay, he sets the holy Scriptures, known from childhood, and a life that continues in what it has received. So today the trumpet sounds in the church as once in Israel: cast down false trust, order your house, refuse smooth religion, and submit your deeds to the word of God. Repentance is not talk but amendment; faith is not display but endurance in the good.

— Tertullian, Against Marcion
“For He hath revealed to us by all the prophets that He needs neither sacrifices, nor burnt-offerings, nor oblations, saying thus, “What is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me, saith the Lord?”
— Barnabas, The Epistle of Barnabas
For Reflection & Discussion
What in your house or habits must be set in order today before God—an unpaid debt, a hidden sin, neglected prayer, or goods hoarded without mercy?
What outward act of religion have you offered while resisting obedience, and what concrete repentance will you make today to cast off that false offering?
How will you submit yourself to the holy Scriptures this day in a plain act of obedience: by keeping a command of Christ, refusing corrupt speech, or correcting a sinful practice you have tolerated?
