Day 277 of 365 · Bible in a Year

Trust Not False Heats

Today's readings set two houses before us: one falling through hidden corruption, the other standing because it cleaves to the Lord. Israel is exposed by Hosea as sick to the core—falsehood within, robbery without, princes glad in wickedness, and hearts inflamed, "like a pan heated for the cooking from the burning flame;" (Origen, Commentary on Matthew). This is not only the heat of lust or anger, but of every passion fed in secret until it governs a people. Sin first lies in the heart, then appears in the street, then ripens into judgment.

So Samaria falls. As Clement says, "And Salmanasar the king of the Assyrians carried away the people of Samaria into the country of the Medes and to Babylon." (Clement of Alexandria, The Stromata (Miscellanies)). Exile does not come suddenly. It is the harvest of covenant-breaking, of forgetting that God remembers all our deeds even when men praise them.

Against this stands Hezekiah. He removed the high places, broke the false object that had become a snare, trusted the Lord, and kept His commandments. This is the shape of sound repentance: not fair words, but the cutting off of occasions for sin. A kingdom is strengthened when worship is purified; a man is strengthened when he refuses divided loyalties.

Therefore let no one say he belongs to God while feeding secret fires. Better to break the bronze serpent than to preserve a pious custom that now serves vanity. Better to lose an idol than lose the covenant. The Lord is ready to heal, but He heals those who cease from deceit, return to obedience, and endure in a clean worship.

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What practice, possession, or habit have you kept even though it now feeds vanity or sin, and when will you cut it off this week?

2

Where have falsehood and compromise entered your speech or dealings, and to whom must you make confession or restitution today?

3

What command of Christ have you delayed obeying, and what concrete act of prayer, fasting, almsgiving, or reconciliation will you do before this day ends?
