Mercy With Fear

The readings set before us one lesson: when trouble comes, do not seek lies, do not defend your own righteousness, but turn to the Lord with fear and repentance. Ahaziah, laid low by his fall, sought an answer from a false god and met the judgment of the true one. Daniel, seeing by the Scriptures that the time of mercy had come, did not presume upon it. He fasted, confessed, and put himself among the guilty. This is the right path for the sick soul and for a sinful people.

Job also humbles us. If even the lights of heaven fade before God’s purity, what boasting can stand? As Origen says, “The stars are not clean in His sight, unless this is to be regarded as a hyperbole.” Therefore let no man answer God proudly, nor hide his sins under excuses. Let us rather pray with Daniel, who joins covenant mercy to obedience: “O Lord God, great, and strong, and dreadful, keeping Your covenant and mercy for them that love You and keep Your commandments, we have sinned, we have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly.”

Yet Daniel’s prayer does not end in despair. The same chapter looks toward the Anointed One. God’s mercy is not softness toward evil; it is His holy way of removing transgression and bringing in everlasting righteousness. So then, when judgment is near, flee from idols; when conscience accuses, do not flatter yourself; when the promise is heard in Scripture, answer it with fasting, confession, and amendment of life. The Lord hears those who return to Him in truth.

“The stars are not clean in His sight, unless this is to be regarded as a hyperbole.”

— Origen, Commentary on John

“O Lord God, great, and strong, and dreadful, keeping Your covenant and mercy for them that love You and keep Your commandments, we have sinned, we have committed iniquity, and have done wickedly: we have transgressed, and departed from Your precepts, and from Your judgments; neither have we hearkened to the words of Your servants the prophets, which they…”

— Cyprian, Treatises

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What false refuge have you been consulting instead of God, and what concrete act today will renounce it and turn you back to prayer and obedience?

2

Will you keep a fast or abstinence this week and join it to a spoken confession of specific sins, following Daniel’s example?

3

Whom have you injured or neglected, and what restitution, alms, or act of mercy will you do today as fruit worthy of repentance?
