The Lord Our Inheritance

These readings teach holy order under the fear of God. David, though king, was not free to act proudly. He numbered the people as if strength could be measured and possessed, and when judgment fell, his heart awoke before his throne could save him. As Irenaeus says, “David, however, was struck with remorse on hearing this, and exclaimed, ‘I have sinned against the Lord;’” This is the beginning of wisdom: not excusing sin, but confessing it quickly.

Ezekiel shows that those who draw near to God must keep His charge. The sanctuary is not common, and the priesthood is not for self-advancement. “They shall have no inheritance, for the Lord Himself is their inheritance.” If the Lord is our portion, then we must not count men, wealth, rank, or earthly security as our life. We are kept by reverence, obedience, and clean hands.

Therefore Paul arms the church, not for boasting, but for steadfastness. In the house, among parents and children, masters and servants, and in every conflict with temptation, the battle is spiritual and must be fought with truth, righteousness, faith, prayer, and the word of God. Tertullian says Christ is He “who girds our loins about with truth, and puts on us the breastplate of righteousness, and shoes us with the preparation of the gospel of peace, not of war.” So let no one blame flesh and blood for the sins he must repent of himself. Let no one seek safety in numbers, office, or outward privilege. The Lord receives the contrite, guards the holy, and strengthens those who stand watchfully in prayer.

“David, however, was struck with remorse on hearing this, and exclaimed, “I have sinned against the Lord;””

— Irenaeus, Against Heresies: Book IV

“who girds our loins about with truth, and puts on us the breastplate of righteousness, and shoes us with the preparation of the gospel of peace, not of war; who bids us take the shield of faith, wherewith we may be able to quench all the fiery darts of the devil, and the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which (he says) is the word of God.”

— Tertullian, Against Marcion

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What prideful thing have you been counting as your security—money, influence, skill, or reputation—and will you confess it plainly to God today and set aside some alms as an act of repentance?

2

What one practice will you keep this week to show that the Lord is your inheritance: fixed-hour prayer, a fast, refusing a dishonest gain, or giving hospitality to someone in need?

3

In your nearest household or workplace conflict, how will you fight with the gospel of peace today—guarding your tongue, obeying a rightful command, asking forgiveness, or praying by name for the person instead of speaking against them?
