Day 234 of 365 · Bible in a Year

Liberty With Repentance

Today’s readings show that sin is not a private spark that quickly dies. David’s hidden deed breaks open his house; Amnon’s lust, once entertained, becomes violence and desolation; Job’s grief weighs upon him like a burden too heavy to carry; and Paul warns that even zeal for religion can become another yoke if it severs us from the obedience of faith. Scripture does not flatter us. It teaches that desire unruled, speech unguarded, and pride unrebuked bear bitter fruit.

Yet God does not leave a man in his filth without a call to repentance. As Irenaeus says of David, “And Nathan the prophet is sent to him, pointing out to him his crime, in order that he, passing sentence upon and condemning himself, might obtain mercy and forgiveness from Christ.” This is the path: not excuses, not delay, but confession. Liberty in Christ is not permission to serve the flesh; it is freedom to crucify it. The man who refuses correction becomes a slave to passion. The man who accepts reproof and walks by the Spirit begins to be free.

So let no one boast, either in former righteousness or in outward marks. “When the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, all his righteousness, by reason of all his wickedness which he has committed, shall not be mentioned to him: in his iniquity which he has committed, and in his sin which he has sinned, in them shall he die.” Therefore bear one another’s burdens, but first judge your own deeds. Confess sin plainly, cut off what feeds it, and fulfill the law of Christ by love, purity, and patient endurance.

“And Nathan the prophet is sent to him, pointing out to him his crime, in order that he, passing sentence upon and condemning himself, might obtain mercy and forgiveness from Christ: “And [Nathan] said to him, There were two men in one city;”

— Irenaeus, Against Heresies: Book IV

“When the righteous turns away from his righteousness, and commits iniquity, all his righteousness, by reason of all his wickedness which he has committed, shall not be mentioned to him: in his iniquity which he has committed, and in his sin which he has sinned, in them shall he die.”

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What sin have you been hiding or excusing that must be confessed plainly today to God and, if needed, to the person you have wronged?

2

What habit, conversation, companionship, or private indulgence is feeding lust or anger in you, and what concrete step will you cut off before nightfall?

3

Whose burden can you carry this week in the law of Christ through a real act of help, almsgiving, visitation, or patient service?
