Truth Without Partiality
The Lord who gave David victory over the nations is the same Lord who judges Mount Seir for its ancient hatred, who hears Job in the ash heap, and who defended the truth of the gospel through Paul. His rule is not divided: He throws down pride, exposes false brotherhood, and preserves those who walk in faithfulness.
Job’s cry teaches that great anguish is not the same as apostasy. A righteous man may loathe the day of his birth and still not curse God. Yet Edom shows another path: nursing enmity, rejoicing over another’s ruin, seizing what belongs to God’s people. Such hatred does not remain hidden. The Judge remembers. As Hippolytus says, “but you shall be cast out on the mountains like a loathsome carcass, with many who fall, pierced through with the sword, and going down to hell.” This is severe, but it is fitting for those who make themselves glad at desolation.
Paul therefore would not yield “for an hour” when the truth of the gospel was at stake. He went in peace to confer with the apostles, yet he did not bend before pretense, fear, or the pressure of men. The church’s concord is not purchased by silence when obedience is being overthrown. We must not use grace as a cloak for compromise, nor suffering as a license for bitterness.
So let us be found under God’s hand: steadfast in the common faith, free from malice, and honest in affliction. The Lord sanctifies His name not only by judging the proud, but by making His people walk uprightly before Him.
“but you shall be cast out on the mountains like a loathsome carcass, with many who fall, pierced through with the sword, and going down to hell.”

For Reflection & Discussion
What old grudge or active hostility must you confess today, and what concrete act of reconciliation or restraint will you practice before nightfall?
Where have you been silent to keep peace when the obedience of the gospel was being bent by fear of people, and what truthful word must you now speak?
If you are under sharp distress, what fixed acts of faithfulness will you keep today anyway—prayer at set times, guarding your tongue, or giving help to someone poorer or weaker than yourself?
