Day 228 of 365 · Bible in a Year

Turn and Endure

The Lord sets three things before us today: a shepherd-king for His people, a righteous sufferer under trial, and a watchman charged to warn. These are not separate lessons. They meet in one demand: do not resist the rule of God, do not curse Him in affliction, and do not delay repentance when His trumpet sounds.

David is received by the tribes because the Lord appointed him to feed Israel. Yet even in taking Zion he met proud resistance. So it is with every soul: Christ’s rule is good, but our old strongholds do not yield gladly. We must not be found among those blind to their true King, resisting His entrance.

Job shows how a servant of God stands when struck in body, mocked in his own house, and pressed toward blasphemy. Cyprian sets his answer before us: “you speak as one of the foolish women. If we have received good from the hand of the Lord, why shall we not suffer evil? In all these things which befell him, Job sinned not with his lips in the sight of the Lord.” Patience is not passivity; it is steadfast obedience under pain, guarding the tongue when grief would make us reckless.

Then the watchman cries that judgment is real, but despair is a lie. God does not call sinners to perish, but to turn. As it is written: “I have no pleasure in the death of him that dies, says the Lord, hut that he should return and live. Ezekiel 33:11” Therefore, if you have sinned, repent at once; if you see danger, warn your brother; if you suffer, endure without murmuring. This is the way of those who belong to the kingdom of the true David.

“you speak as one of the foolish women. If we have received good from the hand of the Lord, why shall we not suffer evil? In all these things which befell him, Job sinned not with his lips in the sight of the Lord.”

— Cyprian, Treatises

“And again: I have no pleasure in the death of him that dies, says the Lord, hut that he should return and live. Ezekiel 33:11”

— Cyprian, Treatises

For Reflection & Discussion

1

What sin must you turn from today without excuse or delay, and what concrete act of repentance will you do before nightfall?

2

Whom are you bound to warn plainly for his good, and when will you speak to him instead of keeping silence?

3

What hardship are you bearing now, and how will you guard your tongue today from complaint, accusation, or bitter speech?
